I could not agree more with Dan Wetzel of Yahoo Sports on his latest article "Brilliant Pacquiao's Prime is Being Squandered."
To me, last Sunday's much-publicized Pacquiao-Mosley bout was not a fight. It was more of an exhibition on how a boxer-- in the person of Shane Mosley-- can retire and punctuate his career with a confrontation with the best pound-per-pound boxer in recent history, and with a US 5 million paycheck to boot.
After the fight telecast was over, I asked myself-- did Pacquiao really need to face Mosley?
I understand that Manny's take was US 30 million or 1.2 billion in Philippine Pesos-- something like Ps 100 million per round or Ps 33.3 million every minute of that 12-round main event.
But is there any boxer out there who will climb up the ring with the determination to slug it out, instead of just running around and later claim to have fought with Manny and remained standing until the last round?
Until that boxer comes along, I suggest that Manny's handlers -- Mr. Bob Arum, I hope this post will reach you-- defer any more fights. Otherwise, we can expect more boos than jabs in Manny's future ring appearances.
